What is the Global Mentoring Institute?

The Global Mentoring Institute (GMI) is an independent nonprofit standards body dedicated to professionalizing mentoring worldwide. GMI establishes and maintains the Mentoring Body of Knowledge (MBOK®), oversees global certifications, accredits Registered Education Partners (REPs), and develops validated assessment tools that elevate mentoring into a recognized, evidence-based profession.

How is GMI different from coaching organizations?

While coaching and mentoring share developmental similarities, mentoring is a distinct relational discipline. GMI focuses exclusively on mentoring standards, certification pathways, assessment systems, and ecosystem development. Unlike coaching associations, GMI establishes a unified body of knowledge (MBOK®) and a tiered global credentialing framework.

The Global Mentoring Institute upholds the highest standards of ethical practice in mentoring. If you have a concern regarding a GMI-certified mentor, program leader, Registered Education Partner (REP), or any aspect of our standards, assessments, or certifications, we encourage you to report it promptly and confidentially.

All reports are handled with care, fairness, and strict confidentiality by our independent Ethics Council. Submitting a concern helps protect the integrity of the mentoring profession and ensures accountability for everyone involved.
