Ethical Standards for Professional Mentoring
The Global Mentoring Institute has established ethical principles and conduct standards which protect trust, dignity, and accountability in mentoring relationships,
- Our Commitment
- Core Principles
- Conduct & Boundaries
- Reporting & Accountability
- Our Responsibility
The Global Mentoring Institute is committed to advancing mentoring as a trusted, ethical, and globally respected profession. Our Code of Ethics establishes the principles and standards that guide mentors, mentees, certification holders, education partners, and organizations across the GMI ecosystem. These standards promote integrity, respect, fairness, confidentiality, and professional responsibility in every mentoring relationship. By upholding these principles, we protect the dignity of participants, strengthen trust in mentoring practices, and ensure that mentoring contributes to meaningful personal, organizational, and societal development.
The Global Mentoring Institute’s Core Ethical Principles establish the foundation for responsible and trustworthy mentoring practice. These principles define the values and expectations that guide the behavior of mentors, mentees, certification holders, education partners, and all participants within the GMI ecosystem. They emphasize integrity, respect, fairness, accountability, and the responsible stewardship of mentoring relationships. Together, these principles help ensure that mentoring is conducted in a manner that protects participants, fosters trust, and promotes meaningful personal and professional development across cultures, sectors, and global contexts.
Ethical mentoring requires clear standards of professional conduct and well-defined boundaries that protect the integrity of the mentoring relationship. Mentors and participants are expected to act with professionalism, respect, and accountability while maintaining appropriate role clarity. Boundaries ensure that mentoring remains a developmental partnership rather than a supervisory, therapeutic, or dependent relationship. By upholding responsible conduct and respecting these limits, participants create an environment of trust, psychological safety, and mutual respect that supports meaningful growth and ethical mentoring practice.
Maintaining ethical standards requires transparency, responsibility, and clear mechanisms for addressing concerns. The Global Mentoring Institute encourages individuals to report conduct that may violate the Code of Ethics, including breaches of confidentiality, misuse of credentials, discrimination, or other unethical behavior. All reports are reviewed with fairness, confidentiality, and due diligence to ensure that concerns are handled responsibly. Through clear reporting processes and appropriate corrective actions, GMI reinforces accountability and protects the integrity of mentoring relationships and the broader mentoring profession.
The Global Mentoring Institute has a responsibility to uphold and protect the ethical standards that guide professional mentoring. This includes establishing clear principles, promoting ethical awareness, and ensuring that mentors, partners, and certification holders understand their obligations. GMI is committed to fostering a culture of integrity, fairness, and accountability while providing guidance, oversight, and appropriate action when ethical standards are not upheld. Through this commitment, we work to safeguard participants and strengthen trust in mentoring as a respected global profession.
